Meet Pradeep – From Creativity to Aged Care
Pradeep is a professional, creative and innovative overseas qualified architect with many years of experience in multi-disciplinary architectural engineering consultancy and construction firms in Government and private sector organisations across South Asia and the Middle East. Over the years he’s worked on a wide range of major landmark projects, including international airports, international convention and conference centres, administrative & office complexes, hospitals and healthcare centres, institutional, residential buildings and commercial factories and warehouses.
Throughout his career, Pradeep has developed highly transferable skills such as attention to detail, precision and the ability to adapt quickly to changing client needs, alongside working with concept designs, schematic and construction drawings. His creative approach to architecture involved experimenting with space, materials, colours, textures, lighting, form, scale and balancing aesthetic vision with safety, stability and functionality.
Transition and Challenges
After migrating to Australia, Pradeep began seeking employment within his professional field. However, he recognised that transitioning his skills and qualifications and gaining local experience would take time. In the meantime, he decided to explore alternative opportunities that would allow him to apply his creativity and technical mindset in a meaningful and impactful way. With a strong passion for cooking, he also identified the growing demand and emerging trends within aged care cookery. Motivated by both interest and industry need, he sought formal training to better understand professional standards, particularly in specialised settings such as aged care. After struggling to find courses tailored to this niche area, he eventually discovered the Aged Care Cooks program, which aligned perfectly with his goals.

Pradeep’s Experience with Cultivating Community’s Aged Care Cooks Employment Pathways Program.
Cultivating Community’s Aged Care Cooks employment pathways is a new training program for individuals to gain skills relevant to aged care catering roles. Our employment pathway model works to build job readiness and practical skills prior to providing internal job opportunities and support into the workforce.
Pradeep completed 30 hours of hands-on training and 22 hours of work experience with our team, enabling him to transfer his professional design skills into the food sector. With the support of the program and instructors, Pradeep was able to:
- Develop foundational cooking skills to confidently prepare adequate, nutritious & appetising meals
- Understand texture modification techniques, including finely cutting and grinding food to meet individual dietary needs
- Learn how food presentation and shape impacts appetite and ease of eating
- Build awareness of the specific challenges faced by aged care residents and the wider elderly community.
- Apply principles of safety and precision, paralleling his architectural experience to food safety and compliance
Much like architectural design, Pradeep learned that food preparation requires balancing creativity with safety, structure and care. Preparing and plating meals became a new form of design for him, but this time it was focused on nourishment, accessibility and wellbeing.
“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Cultivating Community’s Employment Pathways Program to anyone looking to develop their cooking skills. The staff is amazing; the training and level of teaching is exceptional. I had a fantastic time and learned some valuable skills for cooking in an aged care setting.”
A program like ours helps address the increasing need for skilled cooks and chefs throughout the Australian aged care sector. As new quality standards are implemented and ageing populations grow, we ensure participants depart the program equipped with a broad range of skills around providing choice through menus, preparing nutritious & safe meals and the importance of culturally appropriate food to better support and care for ageing communities.
Outcomes and Impact
The program has enabled Pradeep to confidently envision a new career pathway in aged care. He now has a strong understanding of the critical role food plays in supporting older people, particularly those with mobility, cognitive or physiological challenges. His ability to adapt, problem-solve and design with empathy has been deepened through hands-on learning and industry exposure with our professional chefs and cooking instructors. It also enabled him to share some of his own cultural recipes within the work experience phase of the program, enabling participants to share knowledge and culture with the group which allows them to help better support the diverse aging communities they may work with. Pradeep’s recipe choices showcased the skills they’d developed and honed, providing choice, creating visual appeal and increasing protein content. This was so successful that these recipes will be shared with future participants and added to our cookbook that’s in development.
The program has been transformational. Pradeep now sees food as a form of design – one that directly impacts dignity, comfort and quality of life for older people. His architectural mindset enables him to think critically about texture, shape, colour, and ease of eating, ensuring meals are both safe and enjoyable.
Importantly, the program has given Pradeep a clear and realistic employment pathway into the food service industry or aged care, a sector experiencing ongoing skills shortages.
What’s next
Pradeep is deeply motivated by his personal experiences and future aspirations. He often reflects on the ageing journey of his own parents, relatives and wants to contribute positively to the lives of older people in the community. With renewed confidence, practical skills and a strong sense of purpose, he is actively seeking employment in an aged care facility, where he can combine his passion for cooking with his lifelong design expertise.
