We establish and maintain both traditional community garden plots and shared “green gathering” spaces designed for collective use. These gardens provide places where people can be active or simply enjoy being outdoors, fostering inclusion across cultures, ages and backgrounds.
Cultivating Community began in 1998 in Collingwood Public Housing, using gardening and creative programs to bring residents together. Over more than two decades, this work has grown into a leading urban agriculture movement.
Today we design, build and support community and communal gardens across Melbourne’s social housing communities. We work alongside residents, local organisations and partners to create spaces that are functional and full of life.

How We Work
Community-led by Design
Our approach puts community at the centre. We collaborate with residents, housing providers, architects and local organisations to design spaces that are practical, inclusive and sustainable — supporting long-term use, shared ownership and strong local connection.
The Green Gathering Model is an approach developed by Cultivating Community to leverage social capital by our collaborative, co-design style in urban green spaces. Green Gatherings focus on community-led initiatives around horticulture and food, and the knowledge, skills, and everyday practices involved in growing, planning, managing, choosing, preparing, and sharing food to meet needs.
Our gardens are designed as places, not just spaces. They encourage connection, participation and a sense of belonging, creating environments where people feel safe, included and empowered to contribute to their community.
We have extensive experience working within social and community housing environments, partnering with government and local organisations to create green spaces that enhance everyday living and support healthier, more connected communities.
